<![CDATA[Bass cab IRs with mics only BEHIND the speaker?]]>
that's something that should be achievable with a lowpass filter following the CABINET]]>
Thu, 27 Jul 2023 20:00:34 +0000

Hey

so TLDR: anyone know (or could make) some IRs with mics only behind the bass cab?

Why:

I heard it was done for old school Studio One style reggae. I also discovered there's a lot more low end punch with mics behind a guitar cab so it makes a lot of sense. I just don't have a bass amp/cab...

that's something that should be achievable with a lowpass filter following the CABINET

Then it is like I expected...Thank You for your Help!

To be honest, the Kemper is not my preferred platform for modern metal bass tones but you can get really good tones out of it too. Sometimes it can be nice to just use a guitar amp or to make a special profile out of an amp sim on the computer and than use a bass cabinet in the Kemper. Especially if you go from the plugin side, you can pre-eq everything a bit more before profiling to match with your bass guitar.

<![CDATA[Bass rig for live setting without a suitable PA]]> Wed, 03 May 2023 03:39:00 +0000 I playa bit of bass through my Kemper powerhead straight into a 1x15 (i have two, one has a Yamaha speaker from a bass combo the other is a Jbl allegedly not great for bass, k130 , but its actually great as well!) so maybe (I assume you have non powered) you just want a sterile power amp to feed directly into your existing amps speaker if the option above doesn’t work. I read elsewhere on here the Kemper cabs aren’t suitable (possibly not even recommend by Kemper?) for bass.

Are there any Profiles on the Rig Exchange you can recommend that might demonstrate this?

It would be helpful in understanding.

Assign the FX to one of the FX switches. Keeping your foot on any of the FX switches will keep the effect active as long as you keep it pressed and upon release, the effect will be off again

I can't believe I never knew this! Thanks!

You can enable space for other outputs. If that wasn't possible I would for sure recommend a small room reverb to simulate it. Not the wideners.]]>

To add more "space" to the main outs (similar to the space option on headphones) you would increase the Stereo mix on some effects parameters to 200%, or add the Double Tracker effect, Delay Widener, etc. The manual is your friend. So are the video tutorials on the Support Page.

You can enable space for other outputs. If that wasn't possible I would for sure recommend a small room reverb to simulate it. Not the wideners.

Jazz basses are great, but P basses have their uses (think Iron Maiden). ^^

call me old fashioned. but find a bassman amp.. all is good :)

Pairing the right amp with the bass is important too. Often bass amps are intentionally coloured and it helps to get one that doesn't suck out frequencies from a place where the instrument is strong. I discovered Smith basses and SWR amps both have scooped mids, so scooped that I couldn't actually hear the pitch when playing live. I ended up keeping the bass and getting a GK RB700 instead as it was a bit more aggressive, especially in the upper mids. Both are gone now but that combo worked really well live. P basses and SVTs are a classic match, anything with a graphite neck into a valve head or SWR is great. Fretlesses need a LOT of mids to sound great (and to hear oneself). Jazz basses are pretty much the industry standard but they are particularly complimented by Mark Bass for finger style if you like that bridge burp. Or SWR if you prefer a Marcus Miller scooped snap. MM Stingrays go really well with valve heads - particularly the Mesa Bass 400+ and Bassman. But also with Warwick heads maybe because classic Warwick BASSES (like the Thumb) have a similar timbre to Stingrays.

It's for my live sound, not recording. Probably should have mentioned that in the beginning :)

Mesa Boogie Bass 400+ is my fave valve head of all time. It's not my backs favourite through. It'll do what you ask though and there are a few profiles in the RE. I would also suggest the Trace Elliot V8, I had one for a while and it had too much low end through a couple of EBS 2x12's. It might have worked better with a couple of 4x10's instead but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I'm looking for a bass rig with a sound like Skate Punk bassists:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-8skzQCH0c

Any recommendations?

I believe he uses a mesa boogie head (I would literally not even know that mesa boogie makes bass amp heads if it wasn't for him. I don't think I've ever seen/heard anyone else play through one) through an ampeg cab. It's just the typical SVT 8x10. I can get pretty much the same tone through the UAD SVT-3 Pro amp sim or the SVT-CL profiles from Rock Profiles. Specifically, it's the profile called "RP SVT-CL ULT LH3 T2".

OK, so... let me preface this by saying that I appreciate everyone who has taken the time to profile their amps and provide them for free or for sale. But that one specific profile is the only bass profile of an SVT (any model) that sounds passable to me. I have tried well over 100 profiles over the last 4 years. I have spent at least $50 on bass profiles. I can't dial in anything that sounds acceptable to my ears on any SVT profiles except for that one in particular. I am probably bat shit crazy and hella rigid, so take this for what it's worth. I do have a few orange profiles that I think sound great. And I have some B15 profiles that I think are amazing. But out of the 100+ SVT profiles that I have, this is the only one that I can actually use. And it can get you pretty close to that 90s punk sound that I heard as a kid and made me go, "oh shit! bass is like super important! That sounds pretty rad!"

Even then, it's about 50/50.... I mostly use my kemper for home studio stuff. I always just record a DI track of my bass. Then, I print that track twice: once through the kemper, and once with the UAD amp sim that I mentioned. About half the time, the amp sim wins. That's just how it goes with bass, tbh. I would never use a guitar amp sim ever again, but bass amp sims still sound really good compared to a kemper profile.

The pick is pretty much mandatory. You already have that covered. But here's the thing.... this is pretty crucial.... Fat Mike's sound has a lot to do with the strumming pattern that he frequently uses. He almost always starts each measure with an upstroke. Give it a shot. The first time I tried it like 20 years ago, my teenage mind was blown away.
