    Hi there,

I have put quite a bit of time into researching headphones for the KPA as it will be my primary reference.

My first set used with the KPA was a pair of sennheiser hd280 that I bought to track acoustic guitar. This set of phones is very similar to the set you have in Ohms, sensitivity, drivers and also they are circumaural closed back in design. They were also dissapointing. They are primarily designed not to leak to much sound wich is neccesary sometimes but is usually a compromise.

I have since bought a pair of AKG Q701. They cost more but the improvement is significant.

They are a full open back design so they do leak quite a bit, but the soudstage is very satisfying. They are very comfortable with a self adjusting headstrap, quite light on the head and not fatiguing at all.

Most importantly they also look super cool

BUT - they are quite difficult to drive and require quite a bit of oomph ( technical term ) from the the headphone out. The KPA can drive them at a suitable volume but you have to crank the headphone output ( accessed in a sub-menu somewhere) and the volume and the master. This is a sure sign the headphones are not been driven to their full potential, so we cant have that can we.

So on its way to me hopefully I have a class A headphone amp to see if we can improve matters more. I will report back in about a week on my findings. You wiil see if you do a search on this forum that some have found better performance using the headphone out on mixers been fed bt the Kpa master outs as well, I assume for the same reason.

Having said this of course it all costs money, but even if you don't want to spend $600 + for phones and amp, I'm sure with a little research you could find a good set of open back design cans that don't require an amplifier. I almost went the way of the Shure srh1440 that got really goog reviews from audiophile sites and they apparently can be driven by an ipod.

After a two week delay purchasing my kemper (the car needed repairs) its here, just delivered at work

Must be be time for my lunch break, I keep a beater Yamaha pacifica and a pair of Sennheiser HD280 cans at work.

Plug em in, turn her on, some sort of clean ac30 profile an go with a a big ol open G chord, ok needs some verbs with the cans, grab two knobs for mix and depth and thats better, a little more gain please and what about a touch of delay, yeah that's real good, move on to another random selection, do the same sort of thing, add a stomp this time, took a minute or two to find the type Knob, select the obliging tube screamer just adding a touch, a massive grin greets my face.

Point to this - I got a really good satisfying low volume sound in under 5 minutes with a really cheap guitar with no prior hands on. Its taken me longer to dial in a good sound on a Fender Twin.

I wanted to believe the hype, and this time it may be true.

    This is gonna be good

After 6 years of selling my gear, raising my young family and playing accoustic only, the gas for gear has returned.

I've just about finished building from scratch a La cabronita clone with 2 x classic Tv Jones pickups, 1 piece swamp ash, tranparent blonde nitro finish and the sweetest hand carved flamed maple 1 peice neck , just got to wire her up

Time to try for the best price for the Kemper, i haven't been this excited for a purchase for a long long time, I'm 43 but feel 10.

If there is anyone out there from Australia who has picked one up i would love to know who from and how much, despite the strong Aussie dollar i still can't find it under $2160 AU.

I also have to purchase some monitors any advice would be welcome, please keep in mind that i will be primarily in a small untreated acoustic room with severe limitations on noise levels, would small 5 inch low watt studio monitors be able to present the Kemper well?

Any experience with headphones would also be appreciated.

    Thanks in advace!
