There are always 2 KPA's running at the same time, one main, one (not in the mix) for spare, it seems that they don't trust German technology that much...

Old habits die hard. Many people do the same thing with tube amplifiers - three per guitarist.:
The amp that is played through, a backup amp, and a spare backup amp.
